2017 Tournament

In the spring of 2017, Jeff decided that he would like to organize a Golf Tournament in memory of his friend and teammate Peter Robinson. Since Peter was #9 on the Vasey Countrymen (and proud of it) the tournament would be held on the 9th day of the 9th month.

Orr Lake Golf course was booked and the word was spread… and what a response it was. He had booked 9 holes and soon realized that wasn’t going to cut it. Luckily the generous people who had booked the other 9 agreed to move their date and we were able to increase to an 18 hole tournament.

It didn’t take long for the 144 golfers to sign up and everything was ready to go. However there was another snag when he found out there was a wedding on the same day and the dinner for the Tournament would not be able to be held at the course…

Luckily with the help of many volunteers they were able to book the Elmvale Curling Club and the Vasey Countrymen Men’s Fastball team – with the help of past and present members and a lot of their families – set out to do the meal themselves.

A wonderful BBQ dinner complete with salads and dessert was served and the day was saved!

The festivities didn’t end at the golf course though. Once we all arrived at the curling club there were prizes,  a Silent Auction and a Pie Auction.  Thank you so much to all the auction donators, pie makers and prize providers. It made for a great end to the day and contributed extra money to the Peter Robinson Fund at the Huronia Community Foundation.

A tournament like this could not have been possible without the help of so many people. There were people approaching businesses to collect the above mentioned donations, making up teams, collecting money, working the registration table, helping at the holes, baking pies, setting up, cleaning up, BBQ’ing and bringing all the food items, and of course Kevin Cascagnette Photography for doing all the team pictures at the 9th hole.

I was so overwhelmed by the people who turned up to celebrate Peter. It was great seeing everyone and sharing stories together and hearing all of the great memories.
